What is therapy?
What is therapy?
Therapy is an opportunity to give your mental, emotional, social, and if applicable, your spiritual self the same value as you would your physical health. You would go the doctor if you had issues with your muscles or even had digestion issues. Why would we seek out a therapy other parts of our well-being.
A lot of therapy revolves around talk therapy. This is a time for you as the client to sit with trained professional on building coping skills or strategies such as mindfulness (meditation) and grounding techniques (deep breathing), to build awareness by exploring your past, processing past negative or as I call them unhelpful experiences, learning to identify and express your emotions and feelings (yes, there is a difference between the two), and aligning your today’s self, to values and beliefs that make sense to you (not conforming to what others or what the world or society wants).
Therapy is a space for you to unpack things that may be uncomfortable to do with other people such as family or friends. Therapy is a time for you to feel how you’ve always wanted to feel. It’s a time for you to be honest with yourself and with someone who will not impose their own biases, but to hold the space for you to unpack and build yourself back up.
